Summer Camp 2008

The 7th Summer Camp with participants from seven Central and South East European countries was an eventful time again.

Our 7th Summer Camp with participants from the Western Balkans and from Central Europe ended August 8th. The young people and their counsellors returned safely to their home countries Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, the Netherlands, Poland and to their homes in the Rhine-Sieg District. The Malteserhof in Königswinter was the home and starting point for all activities. Everybody made new experiences, learned a lot and found new friends for the future.

The heart of the programme of those three weeks aimed at building trust and confidence. The focus was on rafting and climbing activities, discussion rounds about the situation in their home countries, Europe in general and Human Rights issues. Professionals helped with the creative workshops theatre, circus, music and land art. Media projects like video film, a camp newspaper and a radio feature were planned and produced. Visits to institutions in Bonn and Cologne and to the fun park Phantasialand rounded off the programme.

In their final reflection about the camp the participants felt a necessity to “become a good person” - regardless of creed or nationality - for the better of society. A survey towards the end of the camp suggests that the young people would like to meet again next year for a reunion. The group plans to deal with problems of minorities and their inclusion into society. Our Serbian partner, the Scout Group “Remizijana” from Bela Palanka, has already started with the preparations for such a meeting. There a young group of Roma will be encouraged to cooperate with our group of participants in common social projects.
